When I help my students with Chinese language learning, most people thought Mandarin Chinese is the only language. However, we also have another Chinese language called Cantonese! As you embark on your journey to learn Chinese as an absolute beginner, you might find yourself wondering: should I learn Mandarin or Cantonese? Mandarin vs Cantonese
Mandarin:
- Speakers: Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world, with over a billion native speakers.
- Regions: It is the official language in Mainland China and Taiwan. Some Malaysian people speak Mandarin and one of the four official languages of Singapore.
- Writing System: People use Simplified Chinese characters in Mainland China and Singapore, and Traditional Chinese characters in Taiwan.
- Phonetics: Mandarin has four tones, which are essential for distinguishing meaning between words.
- Use in Business and Media: Due to its widespread use, Mandarin is often the preferred language for business, government, and media across China and internationally.
Cantonese:
- Speakers: Cantonese has around 80 million native speakers. It is widely spoken in Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, Macau, and among Chinese communities worldwide.
- Regions: Cantonese is the dominant language in Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, and Macau.
- Writing System: Cantonese typically uses Traditional Chinese characters, especially in Hong Kong and Macau, but most people in Guangdong use Simplified ones.
- Phonetics: Cantonese has six to nine tones, depending on the region, making its pronunciation more complex than Mandarin.
- Cultural Significance: Cantonese is deeply rooted in the cultural identity of Hong Kong and Guangdong, known for its rich tradition in music, cinema, and cuisine.
Which One Should You Learn?
Learn Mandarin if:
- You Plan to Visit or Do Business in Mandarin areas: Mandarin is the official language and is widely used in business, education, and daily life.
- You Want Broader Communication: With over a billion speakers, learning Mandarin opens up communication with a larger portion of the Chinese-speaking world.
- You’re Interested in Chinese Media and Literature: Mandarin is the primary language for most Chinese media, including news, television, and literature.
Learn Cantonese if:
- You Have Ties to Hong Kong or Macau: Cantonese is the primary language in these regions and is essential for daily communication.
- You’re Interested in Cantonese Culture: From its unique cuisine to its vibrant film and music industry, Cantonese culture has a rich heritage.
- You Plan to Engage with the Global Cantonese Community: Cantonese is widely spoken in Chinese communities around the world, particularly in cities like Vancouver, San Francisco, and Sydney.
